8 Essential keywords you need to track in Social Media

Selecting the right keywords is an essential piece to online marketing programs. It should also be a crucial part of your Social Media monitoring strategy.

At Actionly you can track these keywords and think of them in 3 distinct categories:

  1. InternalSocial Media Monitoring Seach Keywords
  2. External
  3. Industry

INTERNAL: These are keywords that are relevant to the core of your business.

1. Brand: Monitoring your brand keyword/s or popular misspellings or abbreviations of your brand are essential. Don’t get to specific when it comes to syntax such as full stops etc. Its better when you keep it general so that
you can capture all the chatter around your brand and not missing anything due to syntax or abbrevation details.

2. Name of your company: If your company’s name is not the same as your Brand, please be sure to track it as well.

3. Trademark or Copyrights: If you have any trademarks or copyrights, please track these keywords as well to ensure their is no copyright infringement going on.

4. People in the Public Eye: Please track relevant people at your company who are or might have been in the public limelight. This could be your Founder, CEO, VP of Marketing, Public Relations Manager etc.

5. Marketing Slogans: If you have a famous advertising slogan, you want to monitor it to see that it’s been used correctly or track the reach of your marketing campaign and hear what customers are talking about it and in what context.

EXTERNAL: This is a category of keywords that are external to your company.

6. Competitors: This is not a suprise to anyone. But monitoring your competitors can really put you ahead of the game. Most companies have press releases which are often pushed online even before it gets on the new blogs.
Stay in the loop about happenings, new products of your competitor. You might even hear their customers rants or raves which can give you an edge on your products or services.

7. Clients: If you are in the Public Relations business this is imperative to you. Knowing about your clients and keeping them in the news is often crucial to your strategy.

8. Industry: This is a very important keyword type that often gets overlooked and we felt deserved its own category. It’s essential to monitor industry keywords that are relevant to your industry so that you are informed about new developements, big mergers or other happenings that could effect your business. When selecting these keywords, don’t be too general. For example if you are in the Online Travel businesses, don’t track the keyword “Travel” as this might generate heaps of irrelevant information.

We at Actionly, hope this blog posting has been useful as selecting keywords for your search is crucial to the success of your Social Media Monitoring.

Snazzy yet Simple Social Media Dashboard

We have recently added a new feature to our Dashboard which has been transformed into a Social Media Dashboard – where we track how your search keywords are trending over time in a simple and easy to follow graph. Social Media Dashboard - Actionly

This is perfect for busy users (like your Boss) who just want to login in to Actionly once a day and check how your keywords are performing over time.  The metric we track in the graph is ‘Buzz Volume‘ which is a simple addition of all the Facebook public posts+Twitter posts+ Google Buzz posts for that keyword. Buzz volume lets you know very quickly what is the performance of your brand, product or competitor keywords that you are tracking over time and tells you if you need to be more active on the Social Media sphere or you are on top of your game.

Of course all this data is exportable in excel, which is a very useful tool. Also on the Dashboard, is a quick synopsis in table format of Total Buzz Volume, Facebook posts, Tweets, Positive and Negative tweets for all your keywords.

This nifty Dashboard is truly one of its kind and gives you quick insights that you can act on for your company or client – which is what we at Actionly are all about!

Stay tuned for more features and updates. We at Actionly our always thinking, churning and love any feedback (support@actionly.com)

6 Reasons for Monitoring Social Media

6 Reasons for Monitoring Social Media

Most companies today are engaged in Social Media. Social Media Monitoring is a key piece of Social Media marketing. Here are 6 reasons why you need to get into the social media monitoring game right now:

1. Listen and engage with customers: Social Media is an incredible place where you can have a one-to-one conversations with your customers. Your customers are talking about your brand or product and you need to monitor what they are saying. You need to engage with them and show them you are listening.

Once you start monitoring you will also be able to find out who are the influencers talking about your brand or industry are. Those influencers are great people to engage with to help you grow your social media program.

2. Manage your reputation: As you monitor what your customers are saying on Twitter, Facebook, Blogs or other channels you will be able to see what users are saying about your brand. At times you will find users who are not happy with your product or service and are voicing their opinions. You should listen to these users, connect with them and try to solve the issue. At times, certain comments might suddenly blow up into a PR disaster and hence its important to have real -time monitoring and a timely response. You will certainly need a PR plan to discuss the negative comments, but monitoring your brand is the first piece of managing your reputation online.

3. Find leads for your business: One of the best things about Social Media is that people are reaching out to their friends or the public to find out about product reviews. They ask questions like “What are the best tools for …” or “What do you think of this camera?”. That’s someone who’s an interested buyer and replying to them with why they should consider your product will help you generate product leads.

4. Monitor your Competition: Since most of the information users are sharing about you and your competitors are public, you can see what customer are saying about your competitors. That might give you feedback on what people think about your competitors product and where you might be able to differentiate.

5. Product Research: Customer opinions about your product or service are a rich source of information for new product research and development ideas. You can see what features users want or what pain points they may have like poor customer service or a not finding some information on your website. These are great ideas for your product improvements. Tweet clouds or tag clouds are great tools to visualize this rich customer information and gain product insights.

6. Measure your Engagement: All the effort you are putting into Social Media needs to be measured. Measuring social media is hard. For example you could choose to measure how many users are coming to your site from different Social Sites. As you monitor your brand, you should also see how many times people are engaging with your brand and use that as a measure of engagement – like how many Twitter followers, how many people are talking about brand, etc. The first start is to monitor your brand to measure your success.

We might have missed other useful insights you have gained from monitoring your social media programs.  Please do write to us and we share your insights. Email us at support@actionly.com

3 Types of Social Media Metrics you must measure!

3 Types of Social Media Metrics you must measure!

Social Media monitoring is all the rage these days and you need to track relevant metrics to gauge if your social media program and strategy is successful.

How you measure your Social Media ROI depends on your objectives when you entered the social media sphere. Was your strategy to increase your brand awareness, or to engage with customers or serve like a customer feedback  platform like Comcast. Depending on your focus, those are metrics you might be interested in measuring and tracking with time. Your unfiltered, brutally honest customer feedback has even been referred to Black Gold. So it is a must to monitor.

There are 3 main categories under which most social media metrics fit into:

  1. Volume
  2. Engagement
  3. Conversion

Volume: The volume metric determines what is the reach and frequency of your brand or company.

  • Twitter: Followers, Followers/Following ratio (TIP: If you have a new Twitter account, the ratio might be low as you will be following more than the number of followers, but gradually that should change to the reverse), # of Tweets
  • Facebook: Total Fans, Unsubscribes (available on ‘old insights’), New Fans/Removed fans, Monthly active users; Media consumption: Photo views, Play and Audio views
  • Blog: Impression, Click/ Visits, Blog subscribers,# of Page Views, New vs. Returning users, # of pages viewed per visit, Newsletter subscribers
  • Youtube: Daily views

Engagement: Engagment metrics help you understand what is the affinity for your brand? And you can track over time what your levels of engagement has increased or decreased.
Metrics that help you gauge this are:

  • Twitter: Retweets, Mentions, Sentiment Analysis (i.e. Positive or Negative Tweets), what times are your links most clicked on, Number of times your Brand is mentioned
  • Facebook: Interactions, Likes, Wall posts, Comments, Post quality (available on ‘old insights’)
  • Blog:  Blog comments,  average time spent, bounce rate (TIP: All these metrics are available free on Google Analytics. Your site needs to be setup correctly.)
  • YouTube, Flickr: Audio or Photo views, user comments, telling friends, users uploading content

Conversion: Conversion metrics maybe the most important ROI metrics that most companies are interested in tracking as this tracks how many leads or sales you have had.
Some metrics in the conversion category are:

  • Inquiries/Registrations
  • Transactions
  • CTR using bit.ly
  • Leads generated
  • Sales

So referring to the Engagement: Volume graph, you’re goal is to be in the top left box, trying to increase both the Engagement and Volume of your Social Media program over time.

Monitoring week-over-week or month-over-month is key. Being patient, consistent with your social media strategy and monitoring these metrics on a regular basis is a key component of your social media monitoring strategy. If there are any crucial metrics we have missed or any interesting new metrics out there, please do let us know.

NewTwitter: What are people saying?

NewTwitter: What are people saying?

Twitter launched the New Twitter on September 14 and received a lot of publicity. The New Twitter attempts to provide a richer user interface to browse links, videos, pictures all from within Twitter. It certainly makes the act of serendipitous browsing of content much easier.

To see what users were saying about the New Twitter, we analyzed what users said from September 21 to September 26, just after the initial frenzy had died down and users started to get access to the New Twitter. We used Actionly’s Social Media Monitoring Dashboard to analyze the data into usable information.

To start with we looked at overall buzz for New Twitter by looking at mentions of the tag #NewTwitter on multiple channels like Twitter, Facebook and Google Buzz. Twitter certainly had most of the volume for #NewTwitter.

Next, we looked at Sentiment Analysis on Actionly, that tells you whether people spoke about New Twitter in a positive or negative light. The data showed that the overwhelming majority of people liked the New Twitter interface.

On Actionly you can drill into Positive Tweets and see Tag Clouds to get an idea of what people are talking about. You can see that Positive sentiments about New Twitter used phrases like Love and Awesome.

By using Actionly’s Social Media Monitoring Dashboard, you can drill into any term or search for terms to see what users are talking about. It’s a very convenient way to make sense of a lot of data. For example, when users talk about liking the New Twitter they frequently talk about the new look being really cool. They talk about the two-pane interface making browsing easier.

All in all, these customer opinions are a great way to track and see what users are saying about your product over time and what features they like or dislike.
